Postcard #64

Postcard #64 from Japan.

Date: 08.09.16
Depicts: Mishima "Morning Mist", ukiyo-e art.
The Grand Shrine of Mishima stands at a fork on the Tokaido Highway from which the Shimoda Highway branches off. Travelers leave early in the cold morning from the front of the torii gate. A traveler riding in a palanquin and a man on horseback in the center are delineated minutely in fine detail while the torii and stone lanterns, groves and houses, and a pilgrim with a staff in the background are painted in silhouette by using the gradation technique unique to woodblock printing whereby things are shown in various densities of shading according to distance. This woodblock print presents a lyrical scene in the morning mist.
From: got from a postcrosser Mayumi.

My 39th postcard from Postcrossing.com project.
Stamps: "Macaca fuscata" (Japanese Macaque), Japan, 2015; "Tamias sibiricus" (Siberian Chipmunk), Japan, 2015; "岩手山 岩手県" (Iwate volcano, Iwate Prefecture), Japan, 1991.
